Take a handful of earth, then tell me a story.
The proposition seems to be narrative, but it depends on the sensory aspect, on the fear or the yearn for the contact with the earth, on the possible meanings and interpretations of telling an unknown person a “story of earth”. The subject of this work lies on this state of confrontation between memory, sensation and the choice of words.
Stories of earth. Isabelle Catucci. Clay box and earth. 0,28 x 0,17 x 0,08 m . 2019-21. Photo by the author.
In a time of little to no proximity and physical contact, the relational work seemed to have lost its purpose. What to do now?
Do I wait for the times to change while keeping my little stories in the earth box, or do I invite, challenge, propose, though considering the impossibility of the act?
The grains of earth still lie on the palms of the hands while I wait for the stories to brew in the throats and exhale from the words kept.
In this time of waiting, the work held back becomes the title of the exhibit and the proposition of a way of thinking about the world, reconfigured by the interdictions of movement between territories, with closed borders from the doors of our houses, although uncontained in the ability to narrate possibilities of this contact and the memory of the contact with the earth, virtually recovered as a feeling that never escaped our grasp.
