The exhibition gathers sculptures, drawings e installations developed during the art residency in Armazém 56 – Arte SX (from October 2020 to March 2021).
The work plan presented follows the questions pointed out in the investigation in course in the ongoing Phd in Sculpture at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon, started in 2019, about the relevance of the earth, while material and concept, through the research on Latin American and Iberian artworks.
In this spectrum, the artistic practice developed during the residency had the goal of listing dialogues between the materials, words and objects, more than elaborating a technique or a mode of representation of the chosen topic.
Nevertheless, the period of art residency, made possible through a public selection edict by the City Council of Seixal, allowed for the continuous development of works in a studio, which was an essential support in the case of tridimensional works such as ceramics and sculptures.
As I knew the routine of the fishing village in Seixal, the observations were effectively cartographed, in visual associations, in the notes about the impressions on landscapes, rhythms, paths, the people and the surroundings.
The exhibit is, therefore, also the result of a process of recognition of the space, the customs and the stories collected during the period of residency. The procedural research on the flows, details and intensities of the Seixal landscapes was enumerated in a Carta Base (Artistic Cartography of the Seixal Bay), in which the courses, historic facts about the fishing village, photographs, drawings, sketches and narrative notes are recodified.
The affective maps created in this period consider the notion of geolocation, as well as the presence and flow of materials and living beings. In the tridimensional works, the methodology of investigation conciliated the tests of materials (ceramic, raw earth and assemblage) with conceptual research, the relevance of materials in their contexts. Therefore, the works were developed as a process, as a set, considering the photographs, the notes, the samples and objects collected.
Even though the confinement caused by the pandemic limited the social relations e possibilities of interaction with the public, this website is an attempt of sharing this research, the ways of execution of the works and the poetics that accompany them. The texts and photographic registers in the exhibit bring an intimist look to the pieces, restoring a way of observing the work that can be multiplied depending on each reading.
Burying the desires and reinventing the wheel of time; with these challenges, the works of installative character were created, in sets that sometimes contradict the exuberance of the thought about the totality and immanence of the earth – for underlining the interest of demarcation and control of the ground –, sometimes blend in with the tangle of ruins and objectual fragments inherent to human culture and inscription in space.
